Multiple “Fixes” Needed Due To Pandemic

by Pres. Ken McInnis

Greetings fellow seniors! I hope this finds you safe, well and following the guidelines for survival in the new “normal" of our world.

The push to re-open the economy could put all Americans at risk, especially us seniors. Without adequate, reliable, functioning testing and tracking in place many will become “casualties” because of the greed of a select few. Please stay home, be safe, and wash your hands frequently. We want you around for a long time!

I invite you to join me in thanking Governor Walz, his administration and the bipartisan efforts of the Legislature to help keep us all safe. Please take a moment to send them a note, an email or make a phone call to let them know you appreciate all that they are doing to keep Minnesotans safe during this pandemic.

Democracy is under attack by the forces we as Union members have fought against for most of our lives. Unbridled capitalism has put us in situation where the greedy at the top are willing to “kill off” any number of people so they can line their pockets with their ill-gotten gain. Seems directed at the most vulnerable in society like us seniors!

Massive bailouts for corporations, small business bailout money going to large businesses, tax cuts for the wealthy hidden in those bailout packages, are all a continuing pattern of transferring the wealth from workers and everyday Americans to the richest in the world.

A meager twelve hundred dollars ($1,200.00) for people to live on for ten weeks while forty-three t

housand (43,000) rich Americans receive one billion six hundred thousand dollars ($1,600,000.00) EACH!

Provisions to allow corporations to delay paying their portion of the FICA tax could lead to permanent underfunding of Social Security. Those payments can be “delayed, with 50% due on December 31, 2021 and the balance on December 31, 2022! If the anti-American leaders are returned in the fall election they may cut the funding permanently!

We need a change if we are to survive as a nation and people!! We need your help to make that change!!

After watching the voter suppression in Wisconsin where voters were forced to choose between exercising their franchise to vote or their health the Council brought a resolution to the Minnesota AFL-CIO for vote by mail. The resolution was adopted and made part of the legislative agenda. It calls for sending a ballot to all registered voters, a voter registration form to unregistered voters, early in-person voting along with an absentee ballot request, secure drop boxes at government buildings for ballots. The adopted resolution can be found on our Retiree Council Website.

Senators Klobuchar and Wyden have authored the Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act that is co-sponsored by Senator Smith.

In the past I have tried to point to some good news in my columns. Sadly, today is not one of those days. We must mobilize every effort to make the changes we need in our government to make America great for ALL Americans not just the greedy few at the top!!

Peace Brothers and Sisters. Please be safe and don’t become a casualty of the COVID-19 virus or the pestilence that’s in control of our America!

In Solidarity,

Ken McInnis
