All of a Sudden Election Season is Upon Us!

I hope you’re exercising your franchise and voting in the Minnesota Presidential Primary. Remember the outcome will determine the delegate strength for each candidate at their respective national political party’s nominating conventions. If you have a preferred candidate I urge you to vote by early ballot before March 3, 2020, or, at your polling place on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. You will be asked to designate your political party preference (i.e. Republican or Democrat) to receive a ballot for that party’s primary.

Speaking of voting, are YOU registered to vote? Minnesota Retiree Council’s Labor 2020 Committee presented workshops at the Campaigns Conference last week about voter registration and about conversations to achieve volunteer commitments to register voters.

Statewide there are too many Union members 62 years and plus who aren’t registered to vote! Given the current thrust of the federal administration and the senate majority, everyone should vote, especially those 62 and older. The attacks on senior safety nets have grown as Republicans seek ways to pay for the $1.5 Trillion tax giveaway to the top 1%!  Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are on the chopping block under the administration’s proposed budget.

The Retiree Council calls for your help in registering the 62+ unregistered union members. We will provide information and assistance in developing a plan to register your affiliate’s unregistered.  If you’re ready to get started, please contact Carol Freeman, Election Work Coordinator in our office.

Remember freedom has a responsibility – Register and Vote!

Don’t forget Precinct Caucuses are Tuesday, February 25, 2020. These are a critical part of our state elections. I urge you to attend. You can find info on where you caucus at the Secretary of State’s Website. https://caucusfinder.sos.state.mn.us/.

Changing focus, your organization should have received an affiliation mailing in the last month with the necessary items to re-affiliate or affiliate with us. We very much appreciate your continued support. Please check to make sure your affiliation is completed soon.

Please save the date Saturday, May 9, 2020. That’s the date of our 2020 Fun(d)raiser which will be held at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 10 Hall, 1681 Cope Avenue E, Unit A, Saint Paul, MN 55109. Information regarding the event has been sent to your organization. Please join us for a great time including free food, entertainment and a chance to go home with many auction items. More on this in a future Retiree Bulletin.

In Solidarity,

Ken McInnis

President
