By President Ken McInnis
THANK YOU to all who participated in the 17th Annual Fun(d)Raiser for the Minnesota State Retiree Council, AFL-CIO. Workers, Contributors and Attendees made this year’s event a success! This was our first time out since COVID–19 forced us to cancel the in-person events for the last two years. We hope you will join us next year at this popular event. Raffle tickets for next year’s drawing should be available soon.
Proceeds from the Fun(d)Raiser will go primarily to our Labor 2022 efforts. Please exercise your franchise and VOTE, VOTE, VOTE! If the party of “NO” were to gain power it may be the last time you would be able to cast your vote in a free and fair election.
President Biden had some “crisp” words for MAGA Republicans and those who want to turn our democracy into and authoritarian form of government. “We the People….” are the ones who control our destiny through our franchise of voting. Please take a few minutes and listen to his speech to those gathered at the Labor Day rally in Milwaukee, WI. Here’s the link: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/watch-biden-assails-trumpies-in-labor-day-remarks Not one Republican has voted to protect your pension, lower drug prices and they all want to take away your Social Security. Please give it a listen.
Here in Minnesota Representative Angie Craig (D MN-2) is always working for us retirees and has proposed doing away with Federal Income Tax on your Social Security earnings. Her Bill HR 8717, You Earned It, You Keep It Act does just that! Here’s a link: https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/8717/text/ih?overview=closed&format=txtWhile eliminating the tax on your Social Security benefits, it also raises the cap on wages that are subject to FICA tax from the current $147,000 to $250,000. We continue to support scrapping the cap altogether. Maybe if we work hard enough and elect our Labor endorsed candidates in large enough numbers we can finally attain that goal.
Democracy is on the ballot this November 8, 2022!! Please register and VOTE, VOTE, VOTE, like your life depends on it because it probably does.
